Unexpectedly EA turned up with Battlefield Bad Company 2 at this year's Eurogamer, letting me get hands on with the game five months before it hits store shelves! Bad Company 2 sees a heavy influence on what the series is known for best - multiplayer.

Straight away the first thing I noticed was that graphically the game looks absolutely superb. Although at a quick glance many of the game's aesthetics look similar to its predecessor, after getting close up it's impossible to deny just how fantastic the game is visually. For a game of this scale with large hectic battles DICE have done a brilliant job of making the game play smooth, from what we saw, yet improve on an already great looking game. On the desert map I experienced, dust particles flew all over, guns have an appropriate reflective shine to their metal areas and the explosion effects look down right awesome.

The destruction 2.0 definitely showed an improvement over its predecessor with the ability to blow small chunks into walls and also destroy buildings in a much more believable and significant way. This should again add another tactical layer to the game.

I saw four classes during the build I played, however this may be set to change. Each of these classes appeared to have much greater customisation options with the swapping out of primary/secondary weapons, equipment and more. However it was hard to get a feel for how DICE have improved upon the first games relatively basic unlock system. From reading multiple sources I'm lead to believe this has been largely improved, but during my limited hands on time this couldn't possibly be reflected. The squad system was also something I was unable to get a real grasp for.

I can however confirm that BFBC2 does indeed have parachutes! Finally they're back after an odd lack of appearance in the first Bad Company. No more having to sit in a Heli getting shot up knowing theres nothing you can do. But sadly regardless of previous speculation there didn't appear to be any way to go prone. Whether this could be some kind of class perk/unlock to gain we're unsure at this time. Another surprise was the inclusion of Remote Control Helicopters, much like those seen in Frontlines.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 impressed me. The game feels similar to its predecessor yet refines it in almost every way possible. With DICE focusing heavier on the Multiplayer portion of the game this time around it really shows. The game is a more visceral experience with the inclusion (finally) of small blood splats when hitting an enemy, along with realistic cries of profanity coming from nearby squadmates.

The demo on show at EuroGamer Expo felt very much like a meeting point between the original Bad Company and Battlefield 1942. The game mode showcased was a control point game, in similar style to 1942, but with three flags rather than five. There are four playable classes. There is the assault class, with an emphasis on powerful weapons. The medic class deals with keeping the team alive, as you might expect. Engineers deal with keeping vehicles in tip top condition, and the Recon class is the sniping class.

The first thing that you notice is just how much Dice have improved the graphics for the sequel. Everything's so much crisper and cleaner. There was only one map on display with the demo, which was a sandy coast, or posssibly island. I didn't explore enough to find out. In any case, there is a great improvement in the level of detail in the graphics, with great particle effects and huge explosions.

HUD displays are kept as unintrusive as possible, with a small display in the bottom corner showing the current match details, which are displayed in numbers rather than the bars of Battlefield 1942, so it's much easier to see how long it will be until you win the match.

The sound is all very nice, with some nice loud and suitably meaty explosions and communications detailing exactly where you have to go. There's a bigger selection of driveable vehicles in game. As well as the standard tanks and trucks, you also get buggy style vehicles that can traverse the landscape quite quickly, but in the style of the smaller Halo 3 vehicles, you are unable to shoot from them. You can try and run the enemies over, however. You can also pilot helicopters in the game, which is a welcome change from the planes of 1942. There was an interesting moment where I was manning the railgun on a team-mates tank, only for a member of the opposing team to attempt to crash their helicopter into our tank and just miss, resulting in a massively satisfying explosion right in from of us.

Overall, the 20 or so minutes I spent with this was a lot more fun than the multiplayer in both the original Bad Company and Battlefield 1942. I certainly will be looking forward to this one.

Currently Battlefield Bad Company 2 is scheduled for release on March 3rd 2010 in the US on the PS3, 360 and PC.
