On the second day of the Eurogamer Expo, the reps from Ubisoft had a nice surprise for the people there as they had the E3 demo code for Splinter Cell: Conviction, and spent about 15 minutes taking the journlists through it, it drew a big crowd.

It started off with an intro with the Ubisoft logo on the wall of a bathroom as Sam Fisher burst in and started beating a guy in there trying to get information about his murdered daughter. This all takes place as an interactive cut scene where you control what Fisher does. You can choke the guy, or even smash his head into a mirror.

Back story is related to you through text that is projected onto walls as you make your way through the game. This can also provide clues as to where you need to go next. In a later part of the demo, Fisher pulls his gun out to scare a bunch of civilians, and this causes a diversion for some nearby guards, allowing Fisher to slip past unnoticed.

The Ubisoft reps talked about ‘earning' headshots, and this lead to the ability to mark and execute, in which you basically choose which a couple of targets to attack and Fisher will attack them in that order. You've also got the ability to use people as meat shields and even throw them at people or out of windows. In addition, you can grab enemies and interact with the scenery. There was a suitable ‘Ooooh' from the crowd as one baddie got their head smashed into a brick wall quite hard.

While it was the same scene from E3 on show the Ubisoft team decided to do things slightly differently than was displayed at the E3 preview. Instead of sneaking Sam around all those civilians he pulled out a gun and sent all the innocents scrambling for cover. The screams and cries peaked the curiosity of the guards at the gate who went to investigate, allowing Fisher to scale the wall. A half cry in alarm and a few headshots later Fisher is breaking through a window and taking on a few more baddies. This walkthrough presented a little more of a directly combative Sam Fisher than the stealthy Sam we saw in the E3 demo, allowing the game to show it offers a little more freedom in gameplay styles this go around.

One of the key features the Ubi team were eager to show was the infamous “mark and execute” maneuver. A feature that has caught a lot of flak to date being labeled as “auto-headshots”. After seeing it in action, that is definitely not the case. In the midst of a fairly intense firefight Sam racked up a good number of kills in various brutal methods earning him the ability to “mark and execute”. So Fisher took some cover and “marked” 2 baddies to “execute” on. The first baddie caught one to the head, the second caught two to the chest. It's not auto-headshots. It's letting a man do what he does best. Trust Sam's judgement, he wouldn't be there today if he didn't know what he was doing.

There was also an area in which there was some guys with heavy weaponry guarding an office that Fisher needed to get to. Rather than try and fight his way through, he would jump out of a window and grab onto a ledge. He then shimmied all the way across the ledge until he reached a window of the office, at which point he jumped in through the window and grabbed hold of the man within, at which point he was surrounded by armed guards and helicopters and the demo ends.

What is blatantly obvious from the demo is that this is a very different animal to Splinter Cell games of old. The agent Fisher has been replaced with a more casual looking, but more intense, gritty one. The stealthy gameplay has been changed up for a more action-based approach, although there is some stealth involved. You can just run in all guns blazing every time. I was a huge fan of the earlier games and I must admit Conviction looks a lot more interesting. Certainly, I shall be taking a closer look at this once it's released, and you should too.

Splinter Cell: Convinction will be released on February 26th 2010.
