Ubisoft's alerted gamers to an upcoming sever transition for its titles, which is set to take a number of online modes for the majority of its games offline, and will actually impact gamers next week when the company moves its gaming servers. PC and Mac gamers will find several games completely unavailable online and offline. Ubisoft will start transitioning its online services from next Tuesday 7th February 2012.

The server transition means that Tom Clancy's HAWX 2 for PC (Not Xbox 360 and PS3) and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction for MAC (Not PC or Xbox 360) are scheduled to go dark as part of the process.

Also, Uplay on PC will fall offline completely, although other PC games not mentioned above will remain playable offline if already connected at least once. The online portions of all other Ubisoft games will be disabled during the maintenance transition, although offline modes should still function normally, the company has warned.

This means that other Tom Clancy titles not listed here will see their online and maybe offline portions go dark on all formats as part of this server maintenance transition. These titles are :

  • Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 1
  • Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2
  • Endwar
  • H.A.W.X. 1
  • H.A.W.X. 2
  • Rainbow Six: Vegas 1
  • Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
  • Splinter Cell: Conviction

The announcement says :

"Starting February 7, Ubisoft will be transitioning the hosting of many of its online services from a third-party data center to a new facility."

"During the transition, some Ubisoft services and online games will not be available - a full list of affected games and services can be found here."

"We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. This move ultimately will help us improve the maintenance of our infrastructure and deliver better uptime and greatly improved services for our customers."

Ubisoft has yet to provide an estimated completion date for the move, recommending instead that people follow its official Twitter account for updates.

Exclusive 'Ghost Recon: Future Soldier' Collector's Edition for Australasia

Ubisoft has announced a collector's edition of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier exclusive to Australia and New Zealand. The package will include an embossed steelbook case, t-shirt and hardcover artbook with exclusive artwork, as well as an Alpha short movie DVD, lithographic prints and in-game unlockable content. Ubisoft has not confirmed a price or any local exclusivity for the collectors edition, but JB Hi-Fi Online is listing it as a pre-order for AU $127.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is taking the series in a more action-focused direction, blending elements of the Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter games with a faster-paced third-person combat mechanic. Do you think it's fair to have a collectors edition exclusive to Australia and New Zealand? Or is it about time Australians get something to lord over the rest of the world, instead of another game ban?

Could 'Rainbow Six: Patriots' Use the Augmented Reality "Bionic Vision"?

There has been some talk in recent weeks and months about Augmented Reality being part of the new technologies featured in the upcoming Rainbow Six: Patriots. Here's the real deal... in which Firefighters are using some new technology called the "Bionic Vision", which allows them to see the world in a whole new way.

The new high-tech mask gives - developed by Joseph Juhnke of Tanagran Partners - first responders data about their surroundings, it gives fighfighers information everywhere they look on the HUD - Heads-Up Display. Firefighters will be able to see oxygen levels, temperatures, and exit paths.

It will even allow them to see what's happening with the rest of their team via the HUD, which maps the name, location and video link on each of the firefighters fingers. To activate a link-up with each member of the team, all the firefighter has to do is get the corresponding finger to touch their thumb and the video image is enlarged to fit in the palm of their hands.

Closing your hand and reopening it will browse through the HUD to the next list of options including "Team Status", "Contaminants", "Preplan", and "Radio". By selecting any of these options, like Contaminants, the "Bionic Vision" would scan the quality of the air and allow the firefighter to know whether there were any dangerous toxins in the air.

This technology would be very useful in big action titles like Gears of War, as well as FPS games like Rainbow Six and Call of Duty and third-person games like Metal Gear Solid, Ghost Recon and Resident Evil. We can imagine many applications for this technology in the game without the hardware, or even with the actual Augmented Reality headset to accompany the game. The results both ways to gaming and to saving lives worldwide could be immense.

Check out the video below to see this amazing piece of technology - called the "Bionic Vision" - in action :
